Balconies divide things. There is always someone up there, and somebody down on the street. If you are up, you have the choice to step out onto your balcony and look at the passersby, or not to go out there, and therefore simply ignore them. You can keep watch for your Romeo, or maybe you’ll miss him. You might fall in love, or you might miss your love. It is somehow easier from street level. You can look up at the balconies and discover your Juliet on one of them, but you could also ignore them and simply continue to look at the other people on the sidewalk, thus avoiding getting involved in a family feud.
