Teamsters

sound installation, first done in Bergamo in 2008-09, later in similar localities

Large speakers were hidden under the rails of a local cableway system connecting the lower (new) and upper (historic) parts of the city. In a relatively distant past the cableway was powered by horses, which hauled the carriages up the hillside. At a natural volume, the speakers broadcast the sound of the hooves of a team of horses on the typical local cobblestones. In spite of the fact that the cableway makes lots of unnecessary noises (beeps and bells of various kinds to mark boarding, departure, arrival, etc.), people were very irritated by the sound of the “ghost” horses.
